Diploma Programme

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is the gold standard in education is an increasingly global and interconnected world. At Somerset College, our students in Year 11 and 12 have the option of completing the Diploma Programme as their pathway and many choose to embrace the challenges and rewards that this rigorous and multifaceted programme offers.

The Diploma Programme is recognised by the best tertiary institutions in the world as providing students with an excellent foundation for tertiary study. Students in the Diploma Programme negotiate their own learning, test themselves against the best and the brightest and are forced to step out of their learning comfort zones. Students grow intellectually, creatively and spiritually as they understand that learning is about authentic human relationships, service and being the best you can be. Our young people at Somerset emerge from their educational cocoon as fully aware and resilient adults ready to flourish and participate in our ever changing world.

The Diploma Programme develops students who have an excellent breadth and depth of knowledge, within their chosen disciplines and within a broader educational contexts as well. The Diploma Programme curriculum comprises of six subject groups, as well as core subjects, which include Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) and the Extended Essay. In these subjects, students reflect on the nature of knowledge, undertake a project that involves community service and complete independent and indepth research into a topic of their choice.

Our Introduction to the IB Ciploma Programme booklet provides more details on this pathway for our Senior students.
